RailStats.org uses nine official Surface Transportation Board collections. Original downloads are preserved unmodified, while normalized outputs and RailStats.org calculations are generated separately.

Latest data update
Weekly service was published on RailStats.org on , using official STB reports. Six carriers’ Weekly Service coverage now extends through October 2, 2026, from reports dated October 7 and retrieved October 8. For September 26–October 2, NS reports 165,576 cars online versus a component sum of 165,574, and 15 trains held per day versus 16 from train-type totals. Cause/type subtotals also differ. Reported figures are retained without adjustment; the reason is unconfirmed. CN remains excluded from speed comparisons. Delivery/local service is unchanged through September 25: 689 records, 655 displayed and 34 CPKC records withheld; UP method-change timing remains unresolved.
Chicago Gateway coverage remains through September 19, 2026. Two newer weeks are withheld: September 20–26 has workbook/portal agreement but no linked matching PDF; September 27–October 3 has workbook/PDF agreement but no portal corroboration in the October 8 review. The October 7 compilation revises 28 September 30 Chicago supplementary cells; 20 revised yard values match the preserved September 30 workbook, but that agreement does not settle source precedence or the Gibson/IHB Autos identity conflict. Neither candidate week nor these revisions is adopted. All 394 existing observation holds remain; gaps are not zeros and dependent changes remain unavailable.
Other published coverage is unchanged: quarterly freight covers six carriers in 2026 Q2 plus revised CN 2025 quarters; separate BRC Clearing Yard Operations ends September 6. The October 8 check found no new linked BRC submission or changed historical download; this does not establish that reporting ended. October 8 release scope, discrepancies and source links.
“Latest data release” marks publication of new or amended data on this site. Routine checks that find no changes leave that date unchanged. Each collection has its own reporting period and retrieval date; this update does not change the other collections.

Clearing Yard Operations and Chicago Gateway
Two separate collections: six BRC workbooks for Clearing Yard, and 990 Chicago Gateway report entries covering 496 weekly periods for inventory and dwell. Historical reports were retrieved September 21, 2026 UTC; the added Gateway workbook and PDF were retrieved September 24. Duplicate attachments are recorded, not counted as additional weeks. Trains held covers seven reviewed weeks. Gibson dwell for September 13–19 remains withheld: IHB Autos reports 15 hours, but the yard identity mapping is unresolved. The published observations retain each source’s reporting periods, units and notes. Original files are preserved unmodified; published JSON is derived separately.

494 individual CSX workbooks, the consolidated reference and CSX methodology were retrieved September 19, 2026. The September 23, September 30 and October 7 reports, retrieved September 24, October 1 and October 8 respectively, extend the series to 498 weekly slots ending October 2. The weekly slots begin with the report dated March 29, 2017. Twenty slots have one or more values withheld; the missing August 21, 2019 workbook remains a gap. Source disagreements are disclosed rather than silently corrected.

66 individual STB workbooks cover eleven weeks for six railroads. Fifty-five observations support the qualified five-road comparison. CN is available individually; its terminal-time treatment needs clarification before comparison. Its August 14 weekly value of 22.49 mph is retained alongside the rounding-compatible compilation value of 22.5 mph.

The official Opendatasoft v2.1 all-carrier CSV export and official instructions were retrieved 2026-09-18.
The official export contains exactly one current row per carrier-month-group. All six rows for an amended carrier-month share the amended flag. Four amended carrier-months exist in the full official export: CSXT 2025-07, AMTK 2026-02, UP 2026-02, and UP 2026-06. The bounded freight output retains the three applicable freight carrier-months and omits Amtrak from the Class I freight comparison.
