Each measure has a different meaning. Relative movement is not a service-quality score or evidence of cause.

How to read this view

Each index equals the reported value divided by its own baseline value × 100. An index of 120 means 20% above that baseline. Changing the date range changes the baseline; selecting a week does not.

Readouts show reported values and calculated changes from the previous selected week. On-time changes use percentage points. The on-time index describes relative movement in the percentage, not a percentage-point change.

On-time departures: Outbound crews pulling prepared trains within two hours of the scheduled slot. BRC states this percentage does not establish cause or carrier responsibility.

Yard inventory: Average daily cars present in the yard. This is inventory, not cars processed or yard capacity.

Yard dwell: Reported average daily dwell. The source does not fully specify the car population, timing rules or weighting.

Interchange partner details

These are BRC’s reported results by interchange partner, not system-wide railroad performance. Names remain in alphabetical order. Departure percentages do not establish responsibility.

Partner receipts do not sum to the yard receipt total. The difference is unexplained in the source. Quotas are operating allocations, not yard capacity. Extras, annulments, denied extras and haulbacks are weekly counts; no success or rejection rates are inferred.

Haulbacks are cars arriving and departing on the same railroad. Re-humps include additional types of handling.

Definitions, coverage and source notes

Humping sorts cars through the yard’s classification tracks. Re-humping is additional handling. The reported counts do not establish how many unique cars passed through the yard.

The first, overlapping July 31–August 6 submission remains separate from these six Monday–Sunday weeks. It describes 07:00 CDT inventory snapshots; later reports do not repeat that timing note. Dwell populations and averaging details remain incompletely documented.

Selected report’s notes:

  • Includes all haulbacks, bad order cars needing repair and/or after repair, cars intended for local industries, cars arriving in east and intended to depart in east, cars arriving in west and intending to depart in west, and operational decisions by BRC.
  • BRC calculates on time departure as the outbound crew pulling the prepared train within 2 hours of scheduled slot time. This percentage is not intended to denote cause or suggest responsibility by any carrier.
  • BRC calculates on time departure as the outbound crew pulling the prepared train within 2 hours of scheduled slot time. This percentage is not intended to denote cause or suggest responsibility by any carrier.

Changes subtract the previous week’s reported value. On-time changes use percentage points. A higher or lower value alone does not explain service quality or the cause of a change.
