Sources, coverage and comparison limitations

This comparison uses 40 checked weekly workbooks for CSX, BNSF, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern and CPKC. All 40 system speeds agree with STB’s compilation. They cover July 18–September 11, 2026, labeled by weeks ending July 24–September 11. Source report dates run July 29–September 16. Retrieved September 20, 2026.

All five describe line-haul speed excluding terminal time. Their train populations are not identical: UP explicitly excludes foreign trains, NS filters calculated speeds above 80 mph, and CPKC defines its system through train symbols. CPKC is shown as its STB-reported system, not as a geography-matched network. Traffic mix, network geography, terminal boundaries and undocumented historical changes limit interpretation. This is a qualified comparison of reported measures, not proof of equivalent operating conditions.

The review is limited to these eight weeks. Earlier UP speed definitions changed in December 2019. Legacy CP/KCS and combined CPKC require separate histories and reporting-period checks. Indexing would not resolve those differences.
